Location: Bafawahun, Diama, Kotomahun, Nekabo
In 2025, we launched an ambitious community-led reforestation programme to restore degraded landscapes across four rural communities in Kenema District, eastern Sierra Leone. With the help of SLEM volunteers, residents, and community leaders, we planted more than 10,000 native tree seedlings, restoring over six hectares of degraded land.
This project helped to rebuild local forest ecosystems, improve biodiversity, protect waterways, improve soil health, and increase community resilience to climate change. Beyond planting trees, local communities were actively involved in nursery establishment and management, and were also trained in sustainable forest resource use.
