This year, with funding from Rainforest Trust, we are undertaking a comprehensive Rapid Forest Assessment of Kpandebu Dama Tihun Forest, a unique island forest on the Moa river in eastern Sierra Leone.
Through this project we will document the forest’s biodiversity, ecological condition, and conservation significance through wildlife camera trapping, biodiversity surveys, habitat assessments, and community engagement meetings. The project will also examine land tenure, governance, and opportunities for long-term community-led conservation of the forest.
The findings will provide the scientific and social evidence needed to guide future protection of the forest and help safeguard its unique wildlife and ecosystems for generations to come. This project represents an important step toward establishing a community-supported conservation area that balances biodiversity protection with sustainable local livelihoods.
